Understanding Future Heatmap

The future Buildup Heatmap visualizes the open interest (OI) and price movements of futures contracts to identify market sentiment. It shows whether traders are building Long, Short, Long Unwinding, or Short Covering positions.

Long Buildup Short Buildup Short Covering Long Unwinding

L Long (Green)

Price ↑ + OI ↑ - Bullish sentiment, fresh buying

S Short (Red)

Price ↓ + OI ↑ - Bearish sentiment, fresh selling

SC Short Covering

Price ↑ + OI ↓ - Bears covering positions

LU Long Unwinding

Price ↓ + OI ↓ - Bulls closing positions

  • Expiry: Select future expiry date to analyze
  • Days: Choose time period for comparison (1, 3, 7, 15, 30 days)
  • Symbol Type: Filter by index (NIFTY, BANKNIFTY) or stocks
  • Symbol Reading: Filter by buildup type (Long, Short, etc.)

Bullish Signals
  • Strong Long Buildup - Fresh buying momentum
  • Short Covering - Bears capitulating
Bearish Signals
  • Strong Short Buildup - Fresh selling pressure
  • Long Unwinding - Bulls taking profits

Open Interest Change percentage shows the rate of change in total outstanding contracts.
Positive OI Change

Higher positive values indicate increased participation and conviction in the move.

Negative OI Change

Negative values show position unwinding and reduced market participation.

  1. Combine with price action and volume analysis
  2. Focus on high OI change percentages for stronger signals
  3. Monitor across different timeframes (1-day vs 7-day)
  4. Pay attention to index vs stock divergences
  5. Use alongside support/resistance levels

Most Reliable: During active trading sessions (9:15 AM - 3:30 PM IST) with high volume.
Use Caution: Avoid making decisions solely based on data during low volume periods or near expiry when rollovers occur.
